Carbon neutrality is a crucial strategy

Carbon Neutrality: A Pathway to a Sustainable Future

In an era where the impacts of climate change are more evident than ever, we at Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (SGI) recognize the critical role corporations play in shaping sustainable pathways for the future. We believe that the alignment of business growth with environmental responsibility is not just beneficial, but essential. This belief underscores the importance of carbon neutrality—a goal that is both urgent and virtuous.

What is Carbon Neutrality?

Carbon neutrality means achieving a net-zero carbon footprint. In simple terms, it involves balancing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a company with an equivalent amount of CO2 removed from the atmosphere. This balance is essential in addressing climate change and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our planet.

To reach this equilibrium, companies must consider their entire value chain—from sourcing raw materials and production processes to transportation and consumption. Businesses can reduce emissions by implementing more efficient processes and adopting carbon offsetting strategies, such as reforestation and funding renewable energy projects. Additionally, adopting Green Revolution practices to improve agricultural productivity with minimal environmental impact can further support these efforts.

Why is Carbon Neutrality Important?

Achieving carbon neutrality is a key step in addressing the global climate crisis—a challenge that affects both individuals and businesses worldwide. Reducing emissions not only helps combat global warming but is also essential for safeguarding the planet for future generations.

At SGI, as a leading beverage manufacturer in India, we take full responsibility for our environmental footprint. By striving for carbon neutrality, we hope to set an example for others in the industry and inspire a broader movement toward sustainability.

The Benefits of Achieving Carbon Neutrality

Adopting carbon neutrality brings a wide range of benefits, extending from public health improvements to economic advantages. Here are some key benefits:

  • Improved Public Health: Reducing carbon emissions often reduces other harmful air pollutants, leading to better air quality and improved health outcomes. This can lower rates of respiratory illnesses and reduce healthcare costs.
  • Protecting Ecosystems: High levels of CO2 in the atmosphere and oceans can damage ecosystems that are vital to human survival. By reducing our carbon footprint, we help preserve biodiversity and protect these ecosystems for future generations.
  • Securing Food Supplies: Climate change disrupts agricultural systems and threatens food security. Reducing emissions helps mitigate the effects of extreme weather, safeguarding crops and food supplies.
  • Stabilizing Energy Prices: Renewable energy sources like wind and solar are less susceptible to price fluctuations than fossil fuels. This can lead to more stable, and often lower, energy costs over time.
    • Future-Proofing Operations: Pursuing carbon neutrality encourages companies to adapt their operations to be more sustainable and efficient. This forward-thinking approach reduces risks associated with climate change and future regulations.
    • Fostering Innovation: The pursuit of carbon neutrality drives innovation, as new technologies and methods are needed to reduce emissions. This can create competitive advantages and new business opportunities.
    • Building Trust with Stakeholders: Companies that commit to carbon neutrality demonstrate their dedication to sustainability and corporate responsibility, strengthening relationships with customers, employees, and investors.
    • Understanding Carbon Positive, Carbon Neutral, and Carbon Negative

In discussions about climate change, terms like carbon positive, carbon neutral, and carbon negative are often used. Here’s what they mean:

      • Carbon Positive: A company or entity is carbon positive when it emits more CO2 than it offsets or eliminates, resulting in a net increase in atmospheric CO2. This exacerbates global warming and can lead to negative public perception and regulatory penalties.
      • Carbon Neutral: Achieving carbon neutrality means that the total carbon emissions from a company’s activities are offset by equivalent actions that remove CO2 from the atmosphere, such as reforestation or investment in renewable energy. A carbon-neutral entity does not contribute to the net increase in atmospheric CO2.
      • Carbon Negative: Going beyond neutrality, carbon negativity means that a company or entity removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it emits. This represents an active effort to combat climate change by creating a net environmental benefit.

      Our Commitment: Carbon Neutral Certification

A major milestone in SGI ‘s sustainability journey has been achieving the Commitment to Carbon Neutrality certification. This certification, awarded by DNV, a global leader in quality assurance and risk management, recognizes our efforts in reducing and offsetting carbon emissions at our Aranya production facility in Bidadi, Karnataka.

This achievement is a testament to our systematic approach to reducing emissions, as guided by the international PAS 2060 standard. It also marks a significant step toward our broader goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

      How SGI Achieved Carbon Neutrality

Reaching carbon neutrality requires a multi-faceted approach. Here’s how we accomplished our first carbon-neutral factory in Aranya:

      • Setting Clear Targets: At SGI, we have committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, compared to a 2015 baseline. Our ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
      • Transitioning to Renewable Energy: We are actively reducing our reliance on fossil fuels by increasing our use of renewable energy. Currently, 33% of our electricity comes from renewable sources.
      • Promoting Energy-Efficient Technologies: We have implemented energy-efficient technologies across our operations to minimize energy consumption. For instance, our use of HHO and Subcarb technologies has led to a significant reduction in energy intensity.
      • Diversifying Our Energy Portfolio: Along with Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for renewable energy, we have installed solar rooftops across multiple sites and deployed biomass boilers to further boost our renewable energy use.
      • Investing in Carbon Capture: We have adopted carbon capture strategies, including reforestation projects and technologies like Carbon Capture and Storage, to actively reduce our emissions.
      • Encouraging Innovation: From production to supply chain management, we integrate sustainable practices across every facet of our business. Innovations like hydrocarbon coolers and ‘zero emission growth’ targets are central to our approach.
      • Fostering Behavioral Change: At SGI, sustainability is a company-wide effort. We foster a culture of environmental responsibility and encourage individuals to make sustainable choices in their day-to-day actions.

Our recent achievement of maintaining zero emission growth despite a 19% increase in business volume showcases our commitment to sustainability. This milestone proves that it is possible to grow while limiting environmental impact—an important step on our journey to net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Road Ahead: A Collective Effort for a Cleaner Future

At SGI, carbon neutrality is not just a target; it is an essential step toward a sustainable and prosperous future. Our work toward carbon neutrality across our facilities is part of a broader, collective effort to combat climate risks and create a cleaner, healthier world. We believe that businesses hold immense potential to reverse environmental damage and contribute to a sustainable future.

Together, we can build a future where economic growth, environmental responsibility, and respect for the planet go hand in hand. Let’s continue striving for a world where prosperity and sustainability are seamlessly integrated, ensuring a better tomorrow for generations to come.
